Many counsellors, psychotherapists and helping professionals find themselves developing others: guiding a new colleague, leading a team, or supporting people through career and personal change. These roles draw on familiar relational skills, yet they also ask for something different. Understanding the distinctions between coaching, mentoring and supervisory management helps you choose the right stance for each situation.

Coaching, mentoring and supervision: the differences

  • Coaching is usually goal-focused and time-limited, helping a person clarify what they want and build the capacity to achieve it.

  • Mentoring draws on the mentor's experience to support another person's longer-term professional and personal development.

  • Supervisory management combines support with accountability, holding responsibility for standards, performance and wellbeing within a team or organisation.

In practice these roles often blend. The skilled practitioner notices which stance a moment calls for and is transparent about it, so that the other person knows what kind of conversation they are in.

Why a counselling background is an advantage

Active listening, empathy, careful questioning and an understanding of group and organisational dynamics are core to effective coaching and leadership. Counselling-informed leaders are often better at noticing what is not being said, working with resistance and creating psychological safety. At the same time, they need clear contracting so that a coaching or management relationship does not drift into therapy.

Core skills to develop

  • Contracting and boundary-setting for coaching and mentoring relationships.

  • Goal-setting frameworks and powerful, open questioning.

  • Giving and receiving feedback that is honest, specific and respectful.

  • Managing performance, conflict and difficult conversations.

  • Reflective practice and ethical decision-making in leadership roles.
