Trauma-Informed Training in Ireland: Principles for Counselling Practice

Written by the ICPS College Academic Team · Reviewed by ICPS College faculty · Last reviewed: September 2026
Trauma-informed practice has become a guiding principle across counselling, health, education and social care in Ireland. It starts from a simple recognition: many of the people we work with have experienced trauma, and the way services are delivered can either support recovery or unintentionally cause further harm.
What trauma-informed means
Being trauma-informed does not mean every conversation focuses on trauma. It means understanding how trauma can affect a person and shaping the relationship and the environment accordingly. Widely used frameworks describe core principles such as:
Safety, both physical and emotional.
Trustworthiness and transparency.
Peer support and collaboration.
Empowerment, voice and choice.
Responsiveness to cultural, historical and gender issues.
The window of tolerance
The window of tolerance describes the zone in which a person can feel emotion and still think clearly. Trauma can narrow this window, so that people move quickly into hyperarousal, such as panic or anger, or hypoarousal, such as numbness or shutdown. Trauma-informed counselling helps clients notice where they are and develop ways to return to the window.
Regulation and relational safety
Co-regulation within a steady therapeutic relationship often comes before self-regulation. Grounding, paced breathing, orientation to the room and a predictable structure all help. Above all, the practitioner's own calm presence communicates safety in a way words alone cannot.
