Trauma-Sensitive Mindfulness: Building Resilience with Compassion

Written by the ICPS College Academic Team · Reviewed by ICPS College faculty · Last reviewed: September 2026
Mindfulness has become a familiar part of wellbeing, education and therapeutic practice. Paying attention to the present moment with openness and kindness can reduce stress and support emotional balance. Yet for people living with the effects of trauma, turning inward is not always calming. Closing the eyes, focusing on the breath or sitting in silence can sometimes bring up distressing sensations and memories.
Why mindfulness needs to be trauma-sensitive
A trauma-sensitive approach recognises that the nervous system of a person who has experienced trauma may be primed for threat. Practices are offered as invitations rather than instructions, with choice about posture, eyes open or closed, and where attention rests. The aim is to stay within what is often called the window of tolerance: enough engagement to learn, without becoming overwhelmed or shutting down.
The place of compassion
Many people who have experienced trauma carry a harsh inner critic. Compassion-focused practices help to develop a kinder, steadier relationship with oneself, balancing the threat system with a sense of warmth and safety. Self-compassion is not self-indulgence; it is a practical resource for coping with difficulty and staying connected to others.
